Today we talk about… The Soul Eater

If there's one manga that really captivated me, it's "Soul Eater" by Atsushi Ōkubo. Imagine a world where you can literally eat souls to get stronger and where your best weapon could transform into a human and become your best friend. This is where "Soul Eater" comes in, a manga that mixes action, dark humor, and a graphic style that is a true feast for the eyes.

First of all, let me say that Ōkubo has created something unique. Not only in the way he mixed horror elements with comedy and action, but also in how he built this incredible world of Death City and Shibusen Academy, where the young soul reapers and their weapons, who are also people , they study and train to fight the forces of evil.

The concept of souls to collect is fascinating. Each pair of a haymaker and a weapon must capture 99 evil souls and one witch soul to transform the weapon into a Death Scythe, something that even the Shinigami, the academy's headmaster, can use. But it's not as easy as it seems, considering the witches aren't exactly waiting to be captured, and the Kishin's shadow threatens to throw the world into chaos.

Now, let's talk about the characters because, believe me, they are the beating heart of this story. Maka and Soul are the dynamic duo at the center of it all, with Maka, the intelligent and diligent reaper, and Soul, the weapon that aspires to be the coolest Death Scythe of all time. And then there's Black☆Star, a boy so over the top that you can't help but love him (or, sometimes, want to punch him), with Tsubaki, his patient and kind weapon. And I can't forget Death the Kid, the symmetry-obsessed son of the Shinigami, with Liz and Patty, his twin guns.

But "Soul Eater" is not just that. The graphics are something that struck me from the first moment. Ōkubo has such a unique and captivating style, capable of making every scene, from the darkest to the completely crazy, simply memorable. The character expressions, breathtaking battles, and moments of pure humor are so vividly drawn that it's impossible not to stay glued to the page.

An interesting anecdote about Ōkubo is that he started out as Rando Ayamine's assistant on the "GetBackers" works before jumping into the creation of "Soul Eater". And you can see how this experience influenced his approach to storytelling and drawing, resulting in a world rich in detail and unforgettable characters.

For anyone new to manga or looking for something a little different, "Soul Eater" is a must-read. Not just for the action and adventure, but for how it manages to create a perfect balance between moments of tension and lightness, all supported by a cast of characters that will earn a place in your heart. And honestly, in a world full of predictable stories, "Soul Eater" is a breath of fresh air that will not fail to surprise you on every page.
